RWE hydrogen boss sees Europe’s innovative strength at risk

Dusseldorf Hydrogen is considered a key technology for a successful energy transition. In the new episode of Handelsblatt Disrupt, RWE hydrogen boss Sopna Sury and editor-in-chief Sebastian Matthes talk about the role hydrogen plays in the green transformation of the economy. “Hydrogen is our only and best chance to defossilize our industry,” says Sury.

Sury also explains where the hydrogen will come from in the future and criticizes the federal government’s plans to expand the hydrogen infrastructure in Germany.

The economist also finds direct words about the origin of innovations and explains why their emergence is a question of mindset. This is shown by comparing the EU with the USA, according to Sury. Americans innovate in companies and “think much, much faster,” she says. Europe comes from a “tradition of research and development” and succumbs to the risk of “getting bogged down in smaller issues”.

The conversation goes far beyond political and technological issues. Sury also reports personally how she talks to her family about RWE’s clearing of the Rhenish lignite mining area of Lützerath and the clearing of the Hambach Forest, and explains why her children don’t think it’s necessary to demonstrate for climate protection.
