Russia will stop natural gas supplies to Poland from Wednesday

Warsaw Russia will stop all natural gas supplies to Poland. As of Wednesday, deliveries to Poland will no longer be made, the Polish natural gas company PGNiG announced in Warsaw on Tuesday. One was informed by the Russian natural gas company Gazprom.

PGNiG sees the decision to stop delivery as a breach of existing contracts. We therefore want to demand damages for breach of contract.

In addition, PGNiG wants to take steps to secure the gas supply in accordance with the contractual agreements. PGNiG has long-term contracts with Gazprom that expire this year.

Poland does not want to pay for natural gas in rubles, as Russia is demanding. For its part, the European Commission had asked gas importers in the EU to continue paying in the contractually agreed currency. In 97 percent of the cases it is the euro or the dollar.

Poland on Tuesday published a list of 50 oligarchs and companies, including Gazprom, against which punitive measures will be taken. The list is independent of the one that EU countries have agreed on.

“We received threats from Gazprom”

Poland’s Prime Minister Mateusz Morawiecki said on Tuesday in Berlin after a meeting with Chancellor Olaf Scholz: “We have received threats from Gazprom to stop gas supplies.” Perhaps Russia is trying to blackmail Poland in this way.

However, Poland had prepared in advance for the diversification of the gas supply. The economy is not at risk. The gas storage facilities are 76 percent full.

Poland is supplied via the Yamal pipeline. Usually no gas from Russia flows to Germany through this pipeline.
