Rishi Sunak becomes Britain’s new Prime Minister

London. Rishi Sunak has won the Conservative Party leadership race to become Britain’s next Prime Minister. The 42-year-old former Chancellor of the Exchequer was the only candidate to receive the support of more than 100 Tory MPs in the British House of Commons.

The party had set this hurdle before the vote. His last remaining rival, the Conservative majority leader in Parliament, Penny Mordaunt, withdrew her candidacy shortly before the deadline this Monday. “We are facing major economic challenges,” said Sunak in a short speech after the decision on Monday afternoon, “our country now needs stability and unity.”

The government crisis in London, which has been going on for weeks, has thus reached another peak. The internal party elections had become necessary after the disastrous economic and political false start of the still incumbent Prime Minister Liz Truss.
