The world-famous fashion journalist, editor and husband of designer Tom Ford (60), Richard Buckley, died on Sunday (September 19) at the age of 72.
He died at home “after a long illness of natural causes,” said a Ford spokesman.
The statement goes on to say: “It is with great sadness that Tom Ford announces the death of his beloved husband Richard Buckley, whom he loved for 35 years. Richard fell asleep peacefully in her Los Angeles home last night with Tom and her son Jack by his side. “
Buckley began his career in 1979 as a fashion journalist for New York Magazine, later writing for Women’s Wear Daily, Vanity Fair, Mirabella and Vogue Hommes International.
He later became European editor for Mirabella, was then editor of Italian Vogue and in 1999 – at the age of 43 – took over the position of editor-in-chief of Vogue Hommes International.

love at first sight
Buckley met the love of his life, the designer and filmmaker Tom Ford, at a 1986 fashion show. Even after three decades, Ford can still “vividly” remember the moment he first saw Buckley.
It was in an elevator, but Ford immediately knew “I would spend the rest of my life with him,” he said on The Jess Cagle Interview in 2016. “When the elevator arrived on the ground floor, I thought: ‘You are the one!’ That’s it. Click. Bought! It was literally love at first sight. “
And further: “We had three dates. Four weeks later we were already living together. ”The couple spent 35 years together. They have common homes in London, New York, and Santa Fe.
Just three years after they moved in together, Buckley was diagnosed with throat cancer. In 2012 he underwent surgery. It is unclear whether his death was related to his cancer or whether he was cancer-free at the time of death.
Their son, Alexander John Buckley Ford (8), was born in 2012 to a surrogate mother. The couple married two years later – shortly after same-sex marriage was legalized in the United States.

The fashion world mourns Buckley. Including: Designer Rachel Zoe. She was among the first to pay tribute to him: “We have lost such a beautiful and special soul, a gentleman of the very best kind, Richard Buckley,” she wrote on Facebook.
Zoe continues: “It was an honor to know him, and having deep, meaningful conversations with him was a gift I will cherish forever. He was brilliant, funny, and bluntly honest, but what was most extraordinary was his true love and devotion to Tom and his son Jack. I will miss you so much Richard. May you rest in peace and with the angels, my friend. “
