Raspberry Pi 5 has finally arrived! Here are the technical specifications

Despite doubts about whether the Raspberry Pi 5 will be released this year, the latest version of the microcomputer has been introduced with notable upgrades at a starting price of $60. Not only does it perform better than its predecessor, it’s also the first Raspberry Pi to come with home-grown silicon

Raspberry Pi 5 performs 3 times better than its predecessor

The brain of Raspberry Pi 5 is the 64-bit quad-core Arm Cortex-A76 processor running at 2.4GHz. Compared to the Raspberry Pi 4 released four years ago, the Raspberry Pi 5 provides two to three times better performance. The device also comes with an 800 MHz VideoCore VII GPU, which the Raspberry Pi Foundation says offers a significant performance increase.

According to those who have tried the device, the Pi 5 starts up quickly and loads web pages faster compared to the old Raspberry Pi 3 Model B+. The device gets very hot, but the Raspberry Pi also ships with an active cooling component that can be mounted directly on the board.

Additionally, Raspberry Pi 5 includes a component produced by the Raspberry Pi Foundation for the first time. It’s the southbridge, the part of the motherboard that helps it communicate with peripherals. With the RP1 southbridge, the Raspberry Pi Foundation says it provides a step change in the microcomputer’s peripheral performance and functionality, allowing it to transfer faster to other peripherals.

The device has two four-lane 1.5 Gbps MIPI transmitters. There is also a feature that allows you to connect two cameras or displays. There is a new single-lane PCI Express 2.0 interface for the first time, providing high bandwidth. However, the Raspberry Pi Foundation states that you will need a separate adapter to take advantage of this feature.

Raspberry Pi 5’s ports include: dual 4Kp60 HDMI display output with HDR support, microSD slot, two USB 3.0 ports, two USB 2.0 ports, Gigabit Ethernet and 5V DC power connection via USB-C.

Other nice features include Bluetooth 5.0 and Bluetooth Low Energy (LE) support, and double SD card performance with SDR104 high-speed mode. All these upgrades make the Raspberry Pi 5 even more versatile as a high-budget desktop PC, media server, or even a security system.
