Putin is only supported by a small faction. Most see how terrible the war in Ukraine is also affecting Russia. The diplomatic network that has been built up over many years – the so-called soft power – was destroyed in one fell swoop. Russia is a pariah state. The economy suffers. Everyone is unhappy. A government official with whom I deal a lot tells me that there are many people in the security apparatus and in diplomatic circles who are very concerned about the outcome.
