Pensioners live here for less than 1000 euros a month

Istanbul, Mexico City, Athens, Bangkok Even the pandemic couldn’t stop the retirement emigration trend. Despite new travel restrictions, quarantine regulations and test obligations for international trips, the number of German citizens who receive their pensions far away from home has recently continued to increase: around 248,000 people received the payments abroad in 2020, according to the pension atlas of the German Pension Insurance. This is a new record again – and around 20 percent more than ten years ago.

The actual number of retirees who spend a large part of their time abroad is likely to be significantly higher: those who are still registered in Germany and receive their pension on a German account are not recorded in the statistics.

The reason for emigrating is often not just the warmer weather in the south: many retirees expect a better lifestyle by moving abroad due to lower costs.
