Outlook for US equities: the year of uncertainty

new York At the end of the year there was another record. The broad US benchmark index S&P 500 closed on Monday at a new high of 4,791 points. It is the 69th time this year that a trading day has ended with a new record. Since the beginning of the year, the S&P has grown by around 29 percent.

High corporate profits and an ultra-loose monetary policy gave the equity markets a tailwind. But big changes are imminent. The experts agree that 2022 will be a “less positive” stock market year than this, as the strategists at the Bank of Montreal put it. The only question is how much worse it will get – and opinions differ widely here.
