In times of crisis, the Germans could rely on all federal chancellors. Helmut Kohl shaped unity after the fall of the Wall, Angela Merkel even has the honorary title of “Crisis Chancellor”. Even Gerhard Schröder, who galloped badly in the Ukraine crisis, functioned after the terrorist attack on the World Trade Center in New York on September 11, 2001. Olaf Scholz has now taken a first step that may allow him to join this ranks of chancellors.
He hesitated for a long time to stop the Nord Stream 2 pipeline. Now he’s finally showing determination. Scholz no longer follows the line of his SPD, but the necessary reason of state. It is still too early to say that he is made of the hard stuff of chancellorship.
A week ago, after a meeting with Putin, he was still exuding confidence. But apparently he had misinterpreted the despot’s message between the lines.
