“Nutella” Rebellion by the Hazelnut Workers

Workers selling hazelnuts to Ferrero, which includes brands such as Kinder and Nutella, claimed that the company has been exploiting them for a long time. Hazelnut producers stated that they will not sell hazelnuts to Ferrero this year as long as these difficult conditions continue.

“We will not sell our hazelnuts to Ferrero this year”

Hazelnut producer Aydın Şimşek, who has been selling hazelnuts to Ferrero for a long time, said that the working conditions were extremely difficult and that they had no other choice as the company became a monopoly. Şimşek also stated that they are tired of Ferrero’s policy and that they won’t sell their hazelnuts to them this year expressed.

Union of Chambers of Agriculture of Turkey (TZOB) Istanbul Branch President Ömer Demir stated that only foreign companies profit from hazelnuts in Turkey and used the following statements; “They buy hazelnuts for 22-23 liras a kilo and sell them for 23 dollars. Turkey exports approximately 300 thousand tons of hazelnuts to the world, but only foreign companies profit from this business. Otherwise, they will control everything everywhere and we will come to a point where we cannot sell our product to anyone but them.”
