US government officials ronin allegedly owned by North Korea and linked to the hacking Ethereum continues to impose sanctions on their accounts.
New Accounts Added to Sanctioned Accounts Related to Ronin Hack Incident
Three new accounts have been added to sanctioned ETH addresses, the Treasury Department’s Office of Foreign Asset Control (OFAC) announced on Friday.
However, the list of addresses that the federal government sanctioned last week regarding the $600 million Axie Infinity Ronin Bridge hack began to swell.
All three of the new sanctioned addresses were stolen in large quantities from the original hacker wallets sanctioned last week. ETH received the transfer.
According to the FBI and OFAC’s statement, the North Korean hacker group tried to evade sanctions by transferring the stolen funds to a third account before laundering them on Tornado Cash.
Today, the hacker group tried to launder Tornado Cash by moving the funds from the sanctioned addresses to another wallet.
None of the sanctioned addresses interacted directly with Tornado Cash.
Tornado Cash Collaborated with Chainalysis to Comply With Sanctions
The nature of the Tornado Cash platform makes it difficult to blacklist certain addresses.
That’s why the platform started using a compliance tool offered by Chainalysis.
However, with this tool, addresses can be blocked on the decentralized application that is only visible to users. Users can still use the platform itself, bypassing this compliance tool.
One of the Tornado Cash representatives said in a statement:
“OFAC is the agency that decides which addresses to ban.
So far we can only guess. Currently, there is 1 address that has been identified by OFAC as having a connection with the Ronin hack incident and should be sanctioned. That’s why Chainalysis also updates based on addresses on this sanction list.”
