Municipalities agree citizens to higher taxes and fees

Berlin The financial situation of many municipalities is deteriorating rapidly. Last year, they still had a billion surplus, as data from the Federal Statistical Office show. But now the general manager of the Association of Towns and Municipalities, Gerd Landsberg, is sounding the alarm. In his estimation, the citizens will soon feel the precarious situation.

“We are running out of expenses, including for social affairs, refugees, energy, staff and due to inflation,” Landsberg told the Handelsblatt. In some municipalities, fee increases are therefore “inevitable”, also because this step is required by law in the event of cost increases. It is also “cannot be ruled out that municipalities will be forced to increase taxes due to the strong development in expenditure”.

The district council sees it similarly. “We can see from the budget plans of the districts that the number of budget deficits is increasing,” said District Council President Reinhard Sager. Possibly “individual or many communities could be forced to increase property and trade taxes,” says Sager. What citizens now have to reckon with.
