MSC, Maersk and CMA CGM: Shipping companies enter the logistics industry

Dusseldorf The high profits of the large shipping companies are shifting the balance in the logistics sector. Market leaders MSC, Maersk and CMA CGM are expanding their power with targeted acquisitions – and expanding beyond their core business in port terminals, freight forwarders and air freight.

Just last week, the Danish shipping group Möller-Maersk announced the takeover of the air freight forwarder Pilot Freight Services for 1.7 billion dollars. The US company specializes in the transport of bulky goods for online trading.

Maersk had just announced a $3.6 billion takeover in December, with which the shipping company intends to take over the logistics division of the Hong Kong purchasing organization Li & Fung. The overland logistics company operates a network of more than 220 warehouses in 14 Asian countries.
