Berlin The Federal Ministry of Economics presents a draft law for the introduction of the gas price brake. According to this, household and commercial customers are to receive 80 percent of their annual consumption from their natural gas supplier from March 2023 at a price of twelve cents per kilowatt hour.

Gas consumers who consume more than 1.5 million kilowatt hours of natural gas per year receive 70 percent of their annual consumption at seven cents per kilowatt hour. District heating customers should also benefit. Here the cap is 9.5 cents.

The draft law thus follows the proposals of the gas commission set up by the federal government in essential points. The aim of the regulation is to help gas consumers to cope with the sharp rise in gas prices. Limiting the price cap to 80 or 70 percent of annual consumption is intended to ensure that the incentive to save gas is maintained.
