Minister Bayraktar: Negotiations for New Nuclear Power Plant Projects Continue

Energy and Natural Resources Minister Alparslan Bayraktar made a statement about the works at Akkuyu Nuclear Power Plant (NGS). Bayraktar met with the workers working at the Akkuyu Nuclear Power Plant site in Mersin’s Gülnar district and had a festive dinner. Bayraktar, who went to the region and received information from the authorities, stated that they aim to commission a reactor every year, and to put it into operation by 2028, within the framework of the plans to complete the Akkuyu Nuclear Power Plant project.

Pointing out the importance of the “silent revolution” Turkey has made in the field of energy in the last 21 years, Bayraktar stated that the country has entered a new phase of the energy revolution by growing its energy three times. Underlining that the nuclear energy field is an important part of the National Energy and Mining Policy, the Minister said that the first nuclear fuel was brought to the field at Akkuyu NPP on April 27 and the project is progressing at a great pace.

“Akkuyu will meet 10 percent of Turkey’s electricity needs”

About Akkuyu NPP’s electricity needs of Turkey 10 percent Bayraktar stated that this energy will be produced in a carbon-free manner and will make an important contribution to the environment. He said the project will prevent about 35 million tons of carbon emissions. Bayraktar also stated that nuclear energy is of great importance in terms of Turkey’s energy diversity and energy supply security. He stated that intensive negotiations regarding the 2nd and 3rd nuclear power plant projects are continuing.
