How does Pixel Luminesce, patented by Microsoft, work?
If this technology makes it out of development, it could be huge for all kinds of use cases and could bring major improvements to some of the best gaming monitors. The patent application, which describes the technology first shared by Windows Report, describes the new technology as a feature that will enable selective dimming.
With Microsoft’s Pixel Luminesce technology, you can decide to keep part of the screen brighter while leaving the rest unaffected, and this can happen dynamically. Microsoft aims to achieve this using a structure called an EM gate driver, which controls the brightness of each pixel through signals.
The EM gate driver will receive information from a luminance controller and instruct it to send pulse-width modulated signals to each row of pixels. This looks like a simple “on” and “off” switch and makes parts of the screen optionally darker or brighter.

It’s still very early, so it’s hard to say when this technology will hit the mainstream market. But if Microsoft’s Pixel Luminesce ever becomes commonplace, it could be a huge improvement over the status quo. Dynamic dimming can provide a more immersive experience in games and movies.
