Dusseldorf The Boston Consulting Group (BCG) is getting a new head of Germany at the turn of the year. The 47-year-old senior partner Michael Brigl will take over this position from Matthias Tauber on January 1, 2022, Handelsblatt learned from corporate circles. The appointment is due to be officially announced on Thursday.

BCG’s top management in Germany had to be filled because Tauber will be promoted to head of BCG’s business in Europe, the Middle East, South America and Africa in January. Even before he officially took up this position, one of his first tasks was to find a successor.

The selection was made after intensive consultation with the partners and BCG world boss Christoph Schweizer, who has been managing the global organization of BCG with 22,000 employees since October. All three – Schweizer, Tauber and Brigl – are based in the Munich office.

Michael Brigl currently heads BCG’s consulting business with private equity firms and institutional investors in Europe and the Middle East. This involves the strategy of the PE companies, the realignment of the content of their acquired companies and further takeover projects. Business is doing well in parallel with the private equity boom; at BCG, under Brigl’s leadership, it has doubled within three years.

Brigl also advises large companies on investments in future businesses. This includes the use of artificial intelligence, but also topics such as plant-based alternatives to meat. The combination of digital expertise and sustainability in his previous projects should have been a decisive recommendation for the new job.

Both are important growth drivers for the large consulting firms. The business economist has also been responsible for corporate venturing worldwide for ten years. It is about the use of venture capital by industrial groups in young companies.

Billions in sales in Central Europe

As head of Germany, he will be responsible for BCG’s Central European business, including Austria, Poland, the Czech Republic, Hungary and, in the future, Switzerland. BCG does not publish any results on a regional basis, but in this format Brigl is likely to be responsible for sales of more than one billion euros. Globally, BCG reached $ 8.6 billion in 2020.

The future head of Germany is considered a proven team player, but also an unusual type of manager. He recharges his batteries several times a week with yoga. Brigl started his career at PwC Consulting in London and switched to BCG in 2005, where he moved up to the partner group in 2013 and was promoted to senior partner in 2020.

The 47-year-old studied business administration at the University of Regensburg and holds an MBA from the IESE Business School in Barcelona and the CEIBS (China Europe International Business School) in Shanghai.
