Frankfurt According to financial sources, the Darmstadt-based pharmaceutical and technology group Merck KgaA is preparing to sell its pigments business. The company wants to free up resources for investments in its pharmaceutical and electronics activities.

The dyes business could be valued at just under a billion euros in a possible deal, people familiar with the transaction said. The products are used, for example, in car paints or cosmetic products. Merck declined to comment on the information.

Within the past year and a half, Merck has separated its pigments division from the group and is now set up independently, according to financial circles. A sales process could begin in the coming months. Merck’s pigments business recovered in 2021 from the corona-related slump in the previous year and increased its sales by eleven percent to EUR 410 million.
