Merck boss considers decoupling from China “not feasible”

Berlin Belén Garijo, the boss of the pharmaceutical company Merck, defends her company’s involvement in China. “We continue to believe in the opportunities in China,” said the 62-year-old in an interview with the Handelsblatt. A global world will not exist without the involvement of the People’s Republic.

She rejects calls for Western companies to break away from China because of human rights violations and geopolitical risks. “I don’t think a decoupling is feasible in the next two decades.” Rather, Merck wants to minimize the risks by making the group “not dependent on a single country or a single line of business”.
