Eight days before the federal election, the Union is further behind the SPD in polls, but was able to shorten the gap – depending on the poll – to three to four points. In the latest ZDF political barometer, the CDU / CSU come to 22 percent, the SPD leads with 25 percent.

In the final sprint, a third party should now bring boom: Chancellor Angela Merkel (67, CDU). Yesterday the CDU officially announced that Merkel would come on stage at noon on the day before the election in Laschet’s hometown Aachen for the big final rally.

Meanwhile, the CDU in the southwest of Laschet warned against forging an alliance with the SPD in the event of a defeat as a junior partner. “I think that’s out of the question,” said CDU parliamentary group leader Manuel Hagel.
