One of the most famous singers in Brazil is dead.
Latin Grammy winner Marilia Mendonca, 26, died in a plane crash on Friday. She was on her way to a concert.
A press spokesman for Mendoncas confirmed her death in a statement, saying that four other passengers had died. The plane crashed between Mendonca’s hometown Goiania and Caratinga, a small town north of Rio de Janeiro, shortly before arrival.
Photos and videos show how the plane lies directly under a waterfall. Mendonca had published a video that afternoon in which you can see how she approaches the plane with a guitar case in hand and is not exactly enthusiastic about the food on the plane.
The singer performed a type of country music called sertanejo in Brazil. With great success! Alone on Instagram she had almost 40 million fans. She was also known for taking up feminist themes in her songs.

With her album “Em Todos os Cantos” she won the Latin Grammy in 2019 for the best Sertanejo album. That year she was nominated for the same award for her album “Patroas”. Mendonca leaves behind a young son who will turn two next month.
On social media, the news of her death sparked a wave of sadness among her fans, politicians and musicians. “I refuse to believe it, I just refuse,” wrote Brazilian soccer star Neymar, who was friends with Mendonca, on Twitter. The Brazilian government also expressed its condolences.
