Lindner sends savings targets to all ministries

Berlin In the budget dispute, Federal Finance Minister Christian Lindner (FDP) is increasing the pressure on the other ministries. The Federal Ministry of Finance sent letters to all departments on Wednesday with specific specifications as to how high their spending may be in the coming year. The Handelsblatt learned this from several people familiar with the process. This should save a high single-digit billion amount.

According to government circles, the procedure had been agreed with Chancellor Olaf Scholz (SPD). This gives more weight to the finance minister’s savings targets. It will be difficult for the ministries to deviate from the guidelines or to get even more out of them.

Accordingly, with the exception of the Federal Ministry of Defense, all departments must make savings. However, these are different. In 2024, some ministries are even expected to get by with less money than previously planned in the medium-term financial plan.
