Berlin With an estimated fortune of 36 billion euros, Lidl founder Dieter Schwarz is the richest German. This is the result of the annual ranking of the “Manager Magazin” for the 500 wealthiest people. The entrepreneur has thus replaced the BMW major shareholders Susanne Klatten and Stefan Quandt, it said on Thursday. With an estimated 33.3 billion euros, they now land in third place on the list.

The Reimann family, which holds shares in several consumer goods manufacturers through its JAB Holding, took second place with 34 billion euros. The Hamburg logistics entrepreneur and Lufthansa major shareholder Klaus-Michael Kühne (Kuehne & Nagel) is listed in sixth place, the former pharmaceutical entrepreneurs and Biontech investors Thomas and Andreas Strüngmann are in ninth and tenth place with 14.8 billion euros.

According to the ranking, there are currently 212 billionaires in Germany – one fewer than in 2021. Due to the crisis, the wealth of the richest Germans had lost significantly in value. The assets of the 100 richest Germans fell by 54.7 billion euros to 667.3 billion euros, or 7.6 percent.

Compared to the stock market, they did relatively well: the Dax-40 lost around 17 percent from mid-September 2021 to mid-September 2022, it said.
