LG breaks range record with 6G technology

6G preparations began before 5G technology entered our lives fully. Engineers at LG Electronics and the Fraunhofer Heinrich Hertz Institute (HHI) broke the range record with 6G technology.

Technologies developed in 5G and before provide communication with frequencies below 100GHz. The 6G technology, which is still under development, will serve with terahertz (THz) spectrum. 6G technology will offer the opportunity to transfer data about 50 times faster than 5G. However, 6G will only have 10 percent of the latency of 5G technology.

Having managed to triple the data transmission distance, the engineers reached a new milestone in coverage. The researchers, who carried out tests at frequencies between 155GHz and 175GHz, transmitted the data in the open air over 320m.

Considering that the biggest disadvantage of 6G technology is its short range, it is possible to say that this development has an important place. The researchers explained that they used amplifiers at both ends to increase the signal strength.

Transmitter amplifier increased from 15 dBm to 20 dBm. A new amplifier is used in the receiver, which reduces signal noise and provides clearer signal reception.

Stating that this record is a technical milestone, officials underlined that 6G base stations in urban areas can be placed at 250m intervals. LG’s CTO and Vice President Dr. Kim Byoung-hoon said, “With the success of our latest demonstration, we are one step closer to realizing 6G speeds of 1 terabit per second (TB) in both indoor and outdoor urban areas.” said.
