The jury considered it proven that Parnas, along with co-defendant Andrey Kukushkin, had tried to “manipulate the United States’ political system for their own financial gain,” the prosecutor said.
According to the indictment, the Ukrainian-born men wanted to use illegal donations from abroad to gain influence over MPs ahead of the 2018 midterm elections to Congress. Among other things, Parnas donated $ 325,000 to an election campaign organization called America First Action, which campaigned for Trump’s re-election in 2020.
Parnas, a US citizen from Ukraine, was arrested at Washington airport two years ago while trying to leave the country. The business partner of Trump’s former lawyer Rudy Giuliani played a role in the Ukraine affair that led to the first impeachment proceedings against the then US president.
