Dusseldorf Only 60 kilometers away from Tesla’s gigafactory in Brandenburg, construction work for another gigantic project is due to begin next spring: the largest lithium factory in Europe. The German-Canadian company Rock Tech plans to process around 24,000 tons of the white raw material per year from 2024 – enough to build 500,000 electric cars.

“This makes Brandenburg one of the first regions in Europe to cover almost the entire value chain of electric cars,” says Rock Tech boss Dirk Harbecke in an interview with Handelsblatt. The lithium itself comes from its own mine in Canada, but everything else is covered, from processing raw materials to building electric cars.

In addition to Tesla’s Gigafactory, which will also manufacture battery cells, chemical giant BASF will also be commissioning its new cathode factory in Schwarzheide in a few months. The cathode is one of the most important parts of any electric car battery.
