Killer Whales Eat Only a Shark’s Liver

A video shared on the internet recently showed live that killer whales ate only the liver of a shark they hunted. The scientific world has provided an explanation for this.

While nature continues to surprise humanity with all its aspects, a drone image published recently allowed us to see very rare moments. Killer whales, known for hunting in perfect harmony in groups, were hunting a white shark.

The whales first hit the shark violently, causing it to bleed. Then they began to feed on the corpse of the shark, which died from the force of the blow and loss of blood. But interestingly, the whales only ate the shark’s liver. Here is an explanation from the world of science for this interesting image.

Michael Weiss of the Whale Research Center shared with Insider that the hunting behavior seen in the video is not actually the first. Moreover, an article published in 2019 was a proof of this. In the article in question, which examined the corpses of beached sharks, it was shared that killer whales ate only the liver of their prey.

According to Weiss, killer whales’ craving for liver stems from their fondness for high-calorie and fatty organs. Killer whales target the livers of sharks, while the other prey species, gray whales, first target the tongue and lips. After the whales eat their favorite part of their prey, they go after other prey.

In addition, according to Weiss, the majority of attacks in South Africa are caused by two killer whales, named Port and Starboard by scientists. Moreover, the activities of this duo drove even white shark whales away from their area. White dogs began to be replaced by copper sharks. So only two killer whales affected the entire ecosystem.
