Berlin When the number of infections rose sharply about a year ago, the matter was clear to Karl Lauterbach (SPD). The 58-year-old, then a health expert for his party, called for a “breakwater lockdown”. That is now necessary, even “the last cartridge” in the pandemic.
Lauterbach had to hear a lot that he was a panic and alarm maker, but a short time later the country was in lockdown. A year later, the situation is completely different. There is vaccine, Germany is boosting at record speed, is in a fourth wave that is waning – and awaiting the fifth with the new Omikron variant.
The situation is different, however, mainly because Lauterbach is now Federal Minister of Health and for some no longer recognizable. He could play freely in talk shows and interviews without being buried by ministers. Now he no longer speaks and decides for himself, but as part of the government.
