1.7 megatons of hydrogen could be exported from Italy to Austria and Germany per year.

Milan, Berlin The Italian pipeline operator Snam wants to supply Germany with green hydrogen from North Africa from 2030. The route “South H2 Corridor”, which is operated by a consortium of five companies, is to run from Tunisia and Algeria to Bavaria. This Thursday, Snam will present the project at a hydrogen conference in Munich, as the Handelsblatt learned in advance.

Snam wants to use a large part of the existing natural gas pipeline network for transport. “Approximately 70 percent of our network can also be used for hydrogen,” says Piero Ercoli, who heads the company’s decarbonization division. Investments of around four billion euros are necessary to set up the entire hydrogen system.
