Fiber internet and excavation permit statement from IMM!

ISTTELKOM AŞ, a subsidiary of Istanbul Metropolitan Municipality (IMM), made remarkable statements about fiber internet and excavation permits.

2023 plans for fiber internet moved to 2053?

After President Erdogan’s statement, it was seen that 5G and fiber internet infrastructures were frequently mentioned in the social media accounts of both himself and the relevant ministries.

For this reason, the statement shared in the past years that fiber infrastructure support will be provided to all of Turkey until the end of 2023 has been the subject of discussion. Many claimed that these plans may have been delayed.

However, in the statement made yesterday, it is understood that Erdogan did not point to the year 2053 as a target regarding 5G and Fiber infrastructure. However, it is said that it is aimed to offer mobile broadband service to all citizens in the next 30 years.

Similarly, it is stated that the 5G infrastructure service will reach a level that can be used by all of Turkey, as is currently the case with LTE/4.5G. It is said that the plans will be implemented in line with 5-year intervals. In other words, we will not have to wait until 2053 for 5G to enter our lives. However, it may take time to provide this service to the most remote point of Turkey.

Regarding internet infrastructure, we see that the 2023 target stated in previous years has not been realized. According to the data of the third quarter of 2021 announced by the BTK, even when we look at the subscribers only in Istanbul, we see that there are households using 2 million 825 thousand 142 xDSL, 1 million 94 thousand 195 Fiber, 385 thousand 48 cables and more than 17 thousand other options.

We see that this difference is larger throughout Turkey. We see that the number of mobile subscribers is 69.7 million, Fiber subscribers are 4.5 million and fixed subscribers are over 17.7 million. Therefore, we can estimate that the existing infrastructure will need to be increased by at least 20 times.
