Is gas from Qatar better than gas from Russia?

Dusseldorf It was a political balancing act that Federal Minister of Economics Robert Habeck had to perform on his trip to Qatar and the United Arab Emirates: On the one hand, Germany wants to reduce its dependence on Russian energy imports as quickly as possible, on the other hand, Habeck, as a Green politician, was able to improve the human rights situation in both Don’t leave states completely out.

And so the search for alternatives to Russian oil and gas turned out to be a balancing act between real political interests and one’s own value-political compass. After his meeting with the emir, Habeck was able to announce that a long-term energy partnership with Qatar is being sought.

German companies could now enter into in-depth contract negotiations for the purchase of liquefied natural gas (LNG). Around two dozen company representatives such as Bayer boss Werner Baumann or Thyssen-Krupp boss Martina Merz accompanied Habeck on his trip.
