Riga According to the Ukrainian police, 18 people were killed in a helicopter crash in Ukraine, including the country’s interior minister, Denys Monastyrskyj. His deputy, Deputy Interior Minister Jehwhenij Jeninund, as well as State Secretary Yuriy Lubkowych and three children are among the fatalities. This was announced by the head of the National Police, Ihor Klymenko. 22 injured would be treated in the hospital, including ten children.

Police chief Klimenko wrote on Facebook this morning that the investigation into the crash site was ongoing.

The crash happened near a kindergarten and a residential building in the city of Brovary. At the time of the crash, children and employees were in the kindergarten. According to the authorities, they were evacuated. Brovary is located about twelve kilometers northeast of the capital Kyiv.

The cause of the crash was initially unclear. There was also initially no information as to why the Interior Ministry leadership was traveling by helicopter. Among other things, helicopters are used to fly injured people to the capital Kyiv.

Monastyrsky, 42, was elected to parliament in 2019 as a candidate for the ruling Servant of the People party, where he headed the law enforcement affairs committee before becoming interior minister in July 2021.
