Camaliot runs on Android 7.0 and higher, supporting satellite navigation
Being the first project funded by the European Space Agency, Camaliot further improves weather forecasts by using the GPS receiver of smartphones around the world. Then it comes to a common conclusion with forecasts and GPS data and presents it to the user.
The Camaliot app can be used on Android devices that support Android 7.0 and above that support satellite navigation. In a way, researchers are trying to use satellite signals to get more information about the atmosphere.
To explain the essence of the event, a satellite signal encounters obstacles, such as the amount of water vapor in the atmosphere, as it travels through the air to the smartphone. Together with researchers at the European Space Agency, an algorithm was developed that analyzes these barriers. Thus, improved weather forecasts emerge with the available data.
This work is seen as the most important step in predicting weather with machine learning. Camaliot will gather information from several different satellite constellations. These include the US Global Positioning System (GPS), Russia’s GLONASS and Global Navigation Satellite Systems (GNSS).
