Industry wants to shut down gas-fired power plants immediately

Dusseldorf, Berlin The industry is convinced that the massive decline in gas supplies from Russia requires immediate action and drastic measures. “We can’t wait any longer until gas is really scarce,” said Christian Seyfert, general manager of the Association of Industrial Energy and Power Industries (VIK), the Handelsblatt. The association represents companies that together account for around 80 percent of energy use in industry.

The danger of an acute gas shortage is increasing, Seyfert warned. Russia has cut its gas supplies through the Nord Stream 1 pipeline in two stages since June 13. According to its own statements, the energy company Uniper once again received less gas from Russia than agreed on Friday. “Today we received around 60 percent less gas than nominated,” said a spokesman. In addition, for the first time since the end of March, the Federal Network Agency has described the situation as “tense” in its daily report on gas supply in Germany.
