Berlin According to a study, there will be a massive shortage of apartments for older people in Germany in the future. There is currently a shortage of around 2.2 million apartments for seniors, according to a study by the Pestel Institute for the Federal Association of German Building Materials Specialists (BDB) on Monday.

“However, this will get much worse in the next few years,” said institute director Matthias Günther. Because in 2040, around 3.3 million age-appropriate units would be needed. However, the housing market is “not at all prepared” for the coming generation of retirees from the baby boomer generation. Today, only about every seventh apartment is age-appropriate.

According to the study, it is to be feared that in the future two-thirds of senior households in rented apartments will have to make more and more savings as housing costs rise. Because the pension is then no longer sufficient for the previous standard of living.
