Five days ago, on February 6, 2023, a 7.7 magnitude earthquake occurred at 04:17 in the Pazarcık district of Kahramanmaraş province. Surrounding provinces, especially Hatay, Adana, Osmaniye, Diyarbakır, Malatya and Şanlıurfa, were also affected by the earthquake.

After more than 100 aftershocks that occurred later, up to 6.6, another earthquake with a magnitude of 7.6 (revised as 7.7) according to AFAD data and 7.5 magnitude according to Kandilli Observatory data took place at 13:24. Today, the number of buildings to be demolished in the event of a third earthquake has been announced.

After 2 earthquakes and around 2 thousand aftershocks, it was determined that there were more than 22 thousand dead, more than 80 thousand injured and 6 thousand 444 destroyed buildings. Environment, Urbanization and Climate Change Minister Murat Kurum said that 171,882 buildings that managed to survive in 10 provinces affected by the earthquake were examined. It was determined that 24 thousand 921 of them were destroyed in 120 thousand 940 different sections, to be demolished immediately or severely damaged.

Of course, the evacuation of the earthquake victims is currently ongoing. The people living in the region are primarily placed in assembly areas, tent cities, dormitories and hotels. It is stated that within the next year, the debris will be removed and new houses will be built and delivered to the earthquake victims.

In addition, entrances to these buildings, which were found to be heavily damaged, are prohibited. In other words, as long as there is no illegal entry, death is not expected in the event of a third earthquake. However, it can indirectly damage surrounding structures, causing damage, injury, and death depending on the time of its occurrence.
