Rome, Vienna Since Saturday, Austria has been the first democratically governed state with general vaccination requirements. In the past few weeks, however, the country has experienced what a complex project this is. Many compromises were necessary, contradictions abound.
Nevertheless, it is an important measure for the government: “It helps us to achieve a high level of overall immunity, not only now, but beyond the summer and into the autumn,” says Austria’s Health Minister Wolfgang Mückstein.
Only the neighboring country to the south was faster than Austria. Vaccination has been compulsory in Italy from the age of 50 since the beginning of February. Every citizen in this age group who has not been vaccinated by then has to pay 100 euros.
