How the PCK refinery in Schwedt should be saved

The economics minister wants to get away from Russian oil as quickly as possible. But at the same time it is in his hands to save the refinery in order to secure the supply of fuel and heating oil as well as jobs.

Berlin From Raul Riefler’s point of view, things can’t go fast enough. “We are ready to take over the PCK Schwedt refinery completely,” said the managing director of the Alcmene Group to the Handelsblatt. His company could “start immediately to find a long-term solution for the continued existence of the refinery”. The sooner a reliable, long-term oriented investor is available, the easier it is to lead the refinery into the future.

Riefler’s announcement is unmistakable, and it has a clear addressee: the federal government, above all Economics Minister Robert Habeck (Greens). The PCK refinery in Schwedt is effectively the last bastion of Russian oil in Germany, a symbol of Russia’s dependence on energy. Germany wants to get rid of this oil as quickly as possible, and the EU is preparing an import ban.
