How the car manufacturer wants to become the most popular employer

Dusseldorf Gunnar Kilian has one goal: the Volkswagen HR manager wants to make Germany’s largest car manufacturer the most popular employer in the world. But the way there leads the group to a new normality. Around 40,000 VW employees in Germany have the opportunity to work remotely for up to four days a week. But not everyone does that.

“On average, our colleagues work mobile two and a half days a week,” said Kilian in an interview with the Handelsblatt. This is the result of the first analysis. “This shows that a 100% presence culture is not coming back. That would also be a mistake.”

At Volkswagen, around half of the workforce works in production, where mobile working is not possible. Kilian wants to offer more flexibility there too. “For example, we are examining agile part-time models in which several employees flexibly share a workplace over several shifts.”
