How Prime Minister Orban is running down Hungary

Vienna Viktor Orban has few friends within the European Union, and the meeting between the Hungarian Prime Minister and French President Emmanuel Macron last week in Paris did not change that. Poor rule of law, corrupt structures, proximity to Russia, blockade of Sweden and Finland joining NATO – there are many allegations from Brussels.

In his own country, however, Organ enjoys more sympathy. There he presents himself as a fervent patriot – which goes down well with conservative traditionalists outside of Hungary. However, the domestic economy and the population only benefit to a limited extent from the economic policy of the Hungarian Prime Minister, as current economic data shows.

Inflation in Hungary was 25.4 percent in January. This forced many Hungarians to limit consumption. For the year, retail sales fell 4.5 percent, according to the country’s statistics bureau. In the same period, industrial production shrank by 3.2 percent adjusted for working days. The weak forint also reflects the economic problems.
