Dusseldorf A project by the traffic light coalition has been the subject of much discussion since the beginning of July: the Ministry of Family Affairs is to save 500 million euros on the instructions of Federal Finance Minister Christian Lindner. A lever to achieve this: a cancellation of parental allowance for top earners. The income limit for social benefits is to be lowered so that fewer parents would be entitled to parental allowance. Specifically, this affects 60,000 couples in Germany: people who together have an annual gross income of more than around 177,000 euros.

At the same time, due to persistently high inflation, the cost of living is becoming more expensive – and with it, spending on children. Surveys by the Federal Statistical Office show: on average, parents spend more than a fifth of their total expenses on their offspring.
