Geneva How big is the nuclear threat from Russia really? As director of the Nuclear Information Project at the Federation of American Scientists in Washington, Hans Møller Kristensen is one of the world’s leading experts in the field of nuclear weapons. The 61-year-old believes the risks are real. However, Kristensen rules out a nuclear response from the West to such a move.

Mr. Kristensen, after the annexation of more Ukrainian territories and severe setbacks by his army, President Putin has again threatened to use nuclear weapons. Is he bluffing or is he serious?
That’s impossible to predict. Ukraine’s military offensive to liberate occupied territories does not threaten the state existence of Russia. But Vladimir Putin puts it that way to justify the possible use of nuclear weapons.
