davos Chancellor Olaf Scholz has fond memories of the most recent EU summit. Council President Charles Michel had invited the Southeast Asian ASEAN countries. At the joint dinner, he asked Scholz to review his first year among EU leaders. According to participants, the chancellor took the opportunity to praise the achievements of free trade.

Scholz warned that ideas such as friendshoring, i.e. the relocation of factories to friendly countries, and decoupling, the politically enforced decoupling from the Chinese market, are a mistake. That was well received by the Asian guests. They fear little more than an end to globalization.
