How a Handelsblatt reporter spent several days in the house of scandal broker Mehmet Göker

Dusseldorf From a young age, Mehmet Göker was one of the most dazzling personalities in the German insurance industry. At the age of 23 he founded his insurance company MEG, and a short time later he became a millionaire. MEG brokered private health insurance policies from various providers and received a commission for doing so. Göker brought in a lot of money for the insurers. They showered him with orders and money.

But Mehmet Göker wanted more. His greed brought him wealth, then debt, and finally an arrest warrant. The MEG went bankrupt and Göker should have been in court for breach of trust and delay in bankruptcy. He escaped this fate by going to Turkey. From there, Göker continues to fool the insurance industry to this day – and still has followers.

More on the subject:

Turkey correspondent Ozan Demircan observed the insurance industry for the Handelsblatt for many years before his time in Istanbul. First as a financial correspondent, later as an investigative reporter. In 2014 he was the first journalist to visit Mehmet Göker in his exile. In the Handelsblatt Crime podcast, he traces the life of the man who flew very high and then fell.
