Health Informatics and Technologies Conference and Fair has started!
In his speech, the Deputy Minister of Health emphasized that the new oil of the age is “data” and stated that Turkey has significant advantages in terms of health data. HIMSS Eurasia 2023 brings together stakeholders in the healthcare sector by bringing together many innovations in areas such as digital hospital, e-health, artificial intelligence and smart systems.
Speaking at the conference, Dr. Şuayip Biri drew attention to the problems brought by urbanization and stated that efforts should be made to understand the negative effects of environmental factors in cities on health and to develop policies. He also emphasized that the aging population increases the demand on healthcare systems and that the cost of chronic diseases is a significant problem.

Another important issue highlighted by the Deputy Minister of Health was the necessity of a holistic health approach. He said that the “One Health” perspective is important in preventing infectious diseases and addressing health in a way that covers the entire ecosystem.
Dr. In his speech, Biri also emphasized the need to increase Turkey’s health expenditures and the individual’s attention to their own health, and emphasized the importance of digitalization of health systems and data-based management.
Stating that the patient of the future has moved from a passive position to an active position with digital transformation, Dr. Biri stated that technology increases health literacy and improves healthcare services by reducing patient-physician information asymmetry. Referring to Turkey’s successes in digitalization, Dr. Biri stated that this cultural transformation makes health institutions more effective and efficient.

“While the urban population is 55 percent today, it will increase to 70 percent in 2050. But unfortunately, even today, the urban population in Turkey is 77 percent. We must make a lot of effort to understand the negative effects of environmental factors, air and noise pollution, especially in cities, on health and to develop appropriate policies.
The population over the age of 65, which is 9 percent today, will increase to 20 percent even for Turkey in 2050. The average per-individual healthcare expenditure doubles for every additional chronic disease a person has.
We have to think about health not only as human health, but also from a “One Health” perspective that holistically protects the health of every living creature. It is important to better calculate the portion of health costs reflected on citizens and to develop policies considering people who cannot access basic health services.
Even today, 200 million people around the world are forced to spend 25 percent of their total household income on health. While the ratio of out-of-pocket expenses to household income is 3.3 among OECD countries, Turkey has the lowest figure among these countries with 1.4.
It may seem good for today, but with increasing risks we may have to develop new budgets or behavioral models. Turkey needs to increase both human resources and health expenditures. While Europe increased the number of physicians by 15 percent in 10 years, we increased it by 38 percent. While 33 percent of physicians in OECD countries are over the age of 55, this rate is 15 percent in our country.
Today, our life expectancy is 77. While the life expectancy in the world was 67 in 2000, it increased to 73 in 2009. Unfortunately, only 5 of these extra years are healthy. When you look at it, life expectancy is getting longer, but very few have a healthy lifespan.
We also need to improve the quality of this life span. Then, the individual needs to pay attention to his own health, use technology as an effective tool in this awareness, and put everyone’s health at the center of every moment..
As many of us know, the number of hospitals that have received at least one validation in Turkey HIMSS EMRAM 6 and above has reached 300. This is actually a great cultural change for us, and it is an extraordinary motivational tool that what we expect at the center is even more effective in the field.
Because everyone wants their situation to be discovered and made aware of, and they change the culture within the organization accordingly. By going digital, healthcare institutions are becoming more effective, more efficient and more successful.
This motivation gives the team there the opportunity to grow and everyone to work synchronously. We have benefited very well from this for years. This cultural transformation also offers new industrial opportunities.
