A friendly paraphrase for the relationship between the statutory health insurance companies (GKV) and Health Minister Karl Lauterbach is still tense. When the SPD politician canceled a virtual appointment with the management of the National Association of Statutory Health Insurance Funds for the third time on Wednesday, the alternating Chairman of the Board of Directors, Uwe Klemens, ran out of patience.

“I’ve got the faxes thick,” he told journalists on Wednesday at an event in Sommerfeld, Brandenburg. “I am no longer available for an appointment with Mr. Lauterbach.” There were urgent matters to be discussed. The health insurance companies are one of the minister’s largest construction sites worth billions.

For years, the coffers have been facing a huge financial hole, which Lauterbach wants to tackle with reforms. However, his financing law has been pending for weeks, which is also due to the need for coordination in the coalition, especially with Finance Minister Christian Lindner (FDP). Lauterbach said he didn’t want to let himself drift.
