High energy costs: How to relieve Europe

Athens, Berlin, Paris, Rome The traffic light parties in Germany have launched a relief package because of the high energy prices: A flat-rate energy price, a reduction in the energy tax on fuel for three months and help for families and low earners are planned. There are also cheap tickets for buses and trains in local public transport.

Governments in other European countries have also taken measures to support households and companies with the soaring energy bills. France and Italy rely more on direct transfers and price caps, Great Britain on tax measures.

The government of French President Emmanuel Macron has been trying for months to cushion rising energy prices for households, also with a view to the elections in April. For many consumers, gas prices are frozen at the October 2021 level. Electricity prices could be increased by a maximum of four percent, and low earners also received a one-off government payment of 100 euros.
