Dusseldorf One of the most mysterious German start-ups to date is facing an order from the Ministry of Defence: Helsing, which is only two years old, is to work with the Swedish armaments company Saab to equip the Eurofighter for electronic warfare by 2028. The procurement office of the Bundeswehr Helsing announced this on Thursday, as the Handelsblatt found out about the company.

With software and artificial intelligence (AI), the combat aircraft should be able to evaluate radar signals faster and better in the future. Helsing co-founder Gundbert Scherf speaks of a “technology turning point”: “Our mission is to ensure that democracies can defend themselves even in the new technological age,” Scherf told the Handelsblatt.

The concept of deterrence only works if democratic states are technologically ahead. It is increasingly about software, data and artificial intelligence.

It is important news for the German defense sector: The Eurofighter is one of the largest European armaments projects. In the special fund for the Bundeswehr, a total of four billion euros are earmarked for the modernization of the multi-role combat aircraft.
