Leitl scolds and flies

“A fair draw,” said Stefan Leitl (45) after Hannover 96’s 1-1 draw in Kiel. And: “It was a very good game.” Nevertheless, the coach drove back to Hanover with a lot of anger in his stomach.

In stoppage time, the Hanover coach was kicked out after an intense dispute with referee Arne Aarnink. Leitl only saw yellow for his rant. He commented on the punishment with applause and further objections – for that there was yellow-red.

Leitl scolds and flies.

Leitl is now suspended in the first half of the season against Kaiserslautern (28.1.) and has to sit in the stands. Assistant André Mijatovic (42) has to take over.

What happened? Kiel goalkeeper Tim Schreiber (20) hit Havard Nielsen in the forehead with his fist in added time. But instead of a penalty, Aarnink gave Kiel a free kick.

Before the head hit against Nielsen, the weak referee (BILD-Rating 5) had seen Nielsen nudge his opponent from Kiel. But: An identical foul against Hendrik Weydandt on the edge of the penalty area shortly before had allowed Aarnik to continue. double measure…

Leitl was visibly touched after the game. Ironically, the otherwise level-headed 96 coach had lost his nerve – because he felt he had been treated unfairly, there was only an “excuse me light”.

The 96 coach: “An emotional thing, that shouldn’t happen. I have to behave differently. But look at the pictures. I didn’t like the explanation. I don’t have to be ashamed of this yellow-red card.”

Because: “There should be a foul play. If he sees that as a foul… Before that, Hendrik Weydandt had an identical situation, and then he had to whistle. It is inexplicable that there is no intervention and that he does not look at it again.”

Another example where the referee and the video referee (in this case Robert Hartmann) come under criticism.

Leitl between anger, desperation and helplessness: “As coaches, at some point we no longer know what they are actually whistling about.”

Does the VAR make that sense? “Certainly not in this way,” explains Leitl. His demand: “There must be clear rules.”

Significantly, Leitl received support from his fellow coach in Kiel, Marcel Rapp (43), who openly admitted: “I couldn’t explain when the VAR intervened and not.”
