Handelsblatt Green: What is green steel?

Dusseldorf Steel has an ambivalent role in climate protection: on the one hand, the material can be recycled as often as you like and therefore plays an important role in the development of a circular economy. On the other hand, steel production releases large amounts of CO2 – and there is still a long way to go before climate-neutral processes become widespread.

At the Handelsblatt annual conference on future steel, industry representatives such as ArcelorMittal Europe boss Gert Van Poelvoorde, Klöckner CEO Guido Kerkhoff and Ulrich Grethe, responsible for the flat steel division at Salzgitter, discussed this path. This episode of Handelsblatt Green also deals with the question of what green steel actually is – and how the industry can find a common definition.
